traffic and Gentoo updates
  • I'm close to reach my traffic amount.
    This is due to:
    1. Public services and related activities
    2. Remote backups
    3. System updates (Gentoo)

Perhaps the third reason could be managed.

As every Gentoo user knows, system updates could be managed in a "local" way. In a LAN, for example, usually one master host makes portage updates and distfiles repository. The other ones grab from the master.

Is it possible to conceive a similar architecture for the IntoVPS network(s)?
In other words, if we start a Gentoo community (or maybe one local Gentoo community for each network: Amsterdam, Cluj-Napoca, etc.) and we share updates, can we save some traffic?

  • I suggest using a VPN and that should help big time.
  • Yes, that would be great and we will add local mirrors in the future just for that. Thank you for your suggestion!
  • How a VPN over Internet could save traffic?
    Sergio
  • A VPN can't, maybe it was meant as a local network traffic rather than an actual VPN.
  • @Tomoiaga
    I mean this.

I'm going to purchase another VPS for different purposes, it will be another Gentoo Linux OS, it could stay in Amsterdam too... There's a way to skip Internet and build a network "shortcut" between them? (Or what else?)
  • Right now we don't have a "private network". So all traffic a VPS is doing is considered internet traffic.

The private network is something we plan to implement in the future.

  • It will be great and, also, it could encourage the community shaping.

    Sergio
  • I'm using to VPSes one for MyQL and another for Web in the same datacenter. Of course this is traffic expensive. For me this would be great!
  • When are you planning to do this?
  • We'll try to offer this by the end of the year.
