Technical description of Linux VPS

Virtual private server (VPS) is a marketing term used by Internet hosting services to refer to a virtual machine. The term is used for emphasizing that the virtual machine, although running in software on the same physical computer as other customers' virtual machines, is functionally equivalent to a separate physical computer, is dedicated to the individual customer's needs, has the privacy of a separate physical computer, and can be configured to run server software. The term Virtual Dedicated Server or VDS is used less often for the same concept.

Each virtual server can run its own full-fledged operating system and can be independently rebooted.

IntoVPS is using the OpenVZ virtualization technology, which uses a single shared kernel for all virtual private servers. The OpenVZ software project rolls its own modified Linux kernel which implements the security isolation between VPS systems. This lowers the memory footprint per VPS (also called VE - Virtual Environment - or Container, in the OpenVZ context) allowing customers to have more memory available for their applications. A single file system is used for all VPS-es on a physical server (also called node) but code that ensures security isolation is in place in this modified kernel.

Besides modifying the kernel and kernel parameters you can do about anything with an OpenVZ VPS. You have root access via SSH, you can install any software and no network ports are blocked.
